“Postcard Row” or Steiner Street was developed by Matthew Kavanaugh in the 1890’s. The buildings have become San Francisco’s most distinctive houses. The name ‘Postcard Row’ is a reference to how often these buildings adorn tourist postcards!
Another name given to the buildings is ‘The Painted Ladies of San Francisco’. The name derives from the colour used by the residents to accentuate their buildings architectural features. Each house has its own unique personality and colour scheme – the result is a fantastic array of colourful homes.
The houses started as single coloured ‘dull’ Victorian buildings. But with the help of artists such as Kardum, Cataletich, Buckner and Wonders from the 60’s to today the houses have been transformed into national treasures.
Each of our architectural sculptures is handmade in our studio in Sussex, England. They are made of strong plaster that has a reassuring weight and smooth, cool feel. The window frames and door are made of etched brass. Stylish ornaments, gifts or presents that are handmade in Britain and look fabulous on a desk, shelf or wall.

Sustainably Crafted
We all want the world to be a better place. We are trying to do our bit. We reuse, recycle and use less where we can. We search out sustainable local suppliers. We sponsor grassroots sports for the local youth, donating both money and time. We sponsor local environmental projects. We know we can do more but we're making a start!
Handmade
We hand make all of our models. Chisel & Mouse is the combination of an artisan’s approach (the chisel) with modern innovation and transformative technologies (the mouse). By capturing life and its big ideas in miniature, the brand celebrates the beauty of our industrialised world.
